Wildlife

The reserve is a haven for various species of monkeys, such as the red-tailed and black and white colobus monkeys and mangabeys. It also houses a population of chimpanzees, who are unfortunately among the major causes of death in this reserve.

Conservation Efforts

In 2014, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) initiated a campaign to evict all individuals who were residing illegally in government forest reserves around Uganda. This was in response to a directive issued by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Associations such as the Kabweeza Tree Growers Association (KTGA) were established to aid in the preservation of the forest reserve. However, KTGA also rented the forest reserve land to people, leading to the cultivation of maize and other crops.

Threats and Challenges

Despite the conservation efforts, the reserve faces several threats. Human activities such as charcoal burning and production, illegal logging, and agriculture pose significant challenges to the preservation of the forest reserve.

Future Prospects

In 2021, the UNCHR partnered with the NFA to replant trees and managed to restore 100 hectares of forest cover in this reserve with the seedlings provided by the NFA. This initiative signifies a beacon of hope for the future of the Rwensambya Central Forest Reserve.

The tale of the Rwensambya Central Forest Reserve is one of resilience and hope. It stands as a testament to nature’s ability to endure and thrive, despite the challenges it faces. As we continue to write the story of this hidden gem, let us remember our role in its preservation and the preservation of all natural spaces around the world.
