Once upon a time, in the heart of Africa, nestled between the Hoima and Kikuube districts of Western Uganda, lies a verdant expanse of natural beauty known as the Wambabya Central Forest Reserve. This forest, home to diverse wildlife and rich biodiversity, has a story that is as captivating as the creatures that inhabit it.

Location and Size

The Wambabya Central Forest Reserve is located near the north-eastern border of the Bugoma Central Forest Reserve. It spans an impressive area of 3,429 hectares (13.24 square miles), making it a significant part of Uganda’s forest reserves.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

The forest is a sanctuary for a variety of species. It houses chimpanzees, forest amphibians like the Golden Puddle Frog and Kivu Clawed Frog, bats such as Duke of Abruzzi’s, silver and mongalia free-tailed bats, and a variety of plant species, including Mutuba trees. Bird watchers would be delighted to spot the yellow-fronted tinkerbird among other avian species.

Conservation Efforts

Despite the challenges of human encroachment, efforts have been made to conserve this precious ecosystem. In 2008, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) staff planted trees on 2,000 hectares of land that had been encroached upon by human activity. In 2011, more than 260 encroachers were given one month to vacate the forest reserve.

In 2021, the Wambaya Forest Conservation and Development Association received funding worth UGX 1.3 billion from the Australia Development Agency to implement a project dubbed “Green Lug Forestry Restoration” that aimed to reduce conflicts between wildlife and humans. The project targeted 3,000 households in the districts of Kikuube and Hoima, and the beneficiaries received tree seedlings, improved seeds of beans, banana suckers, maize, beehives, and goats.

Challenges and Controversies

The forest faces threats from human activities such as charcoal burning, logging, poaching, deforestation, and agriculture such as rice and tobacco farming. A hydropower plant was constructed on the River Wambabya in Buseruka subcounty, but the silting of the river due to human activities has hindered power generation.

The construction of the 1,443-kilometer East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) faced resistance from climate activists and environmentalists as it was supposed to pass through Wambabya, Bugoma, and Taala Central Forest Reserves. This caused international banks such as HSBC, BNP Paribas, and insurers such as Allianz Group to not back the pipeline financially.

Conclusion

The Wambabya Central Forest Reserve is a testament to Uganda’s rich biodiversity and the ongoing efforts to conserve it. Despite the challenges, the forest continues to thrive, providing a home for diverse species and contributing to the global fight against climate change. As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize and invest in the conservation of these invaluable natural resources.
