Once upon a time, in the heart of Western Uganda, nestled between the subcounties of Kiryanga and Pacwa in Kibaale District, lies a hidden gem of nature: the Rwengeye Central Forest Reserve. This protected tropical high forest, spanning an area of 329 hectares (3.24 km2), is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity.

A Historical Perspective

Declared a forest reserve in 1932, Rwengeye has stood the test of time, silently witnessing the ebb and flow of life around it. Managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA), it is a symbol of the country’s efforts to balance ecological preservation with human progress.

The Forest’s Inhabitants

Rwengeye is not just a forest; it’s a thriving ecosystem. It is home to a variety of primates, including mangabeys, red-tailed and black and white colobus monkeys, and even chimpanzees. The forest’s lush canopy also provides a sanctuary for numerous bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Conservation Efforts

In a bid to protect this precious ecosystem, the NFA has allowed community-based organizations to carry out beekeeping within the forest reserves. For instance, Pachwa Linda Ebyobuhangwa Association (PLEA) and Kikonda Tulinde Ebyobuhangwa Association (KTEA) started their operations in Rwengeye in June 2012. These initiatives not only provide a sustainable livelihood for the local communities but also incentivize them to conserve and restore habitats for chimpanzees.

Challenges and Threats

Despite these efforts, Rwengeye faces several threats. Encroachment, illegal lumbering, charcoal burning, and cash crop farming such as rice and tobacco farming pose significant challenges. In 2015, the NFA ordered encroachers, who had cleared some forest and created a trading center, to vacate the forest land, but they refused.

The Way Forward

In 2021, the Umoja Conservation Trust organized Albertine Conservation Week in the Albertine districts, such as Kibaale District, where Bunyoro farmers were urged to plant more trees. This initiative aimed to educate them about the dangers of environmental destruction.

The story of Rwengeye Central Forest Reserve is a story of resilience and hope. It is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity for future generations. As we continue to grapple with the challenges of conservation, let us remember that every tree planted, every habitat restored, and every species protected brings us one step closer to a sustainable future.
