Makerere

Makerere is a neighborhood in the city of Kampala, Uganda's capital city. The name also applies to the hill on which this neighborhood is perched; one of the original seven hills that constituted Kampala at the time of its founding, in the early 1900s.

 Location of Makerere

Kawempe Division is where Makerere is situated. Bwaise, Mulago, Wandegeya, Nakasero, Old Kampala, and Nakulabye are its neighbours to the north, east, south, southeast, and southwest, respectively. To the west of Makerere are Kasubi and Kawaala. The distance from this area to Kampala's central business centre is roughly 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) by vehicle.

Overview

This hill, known as the "fountain of knowledge" or "the hill of the erudite," rises 4,188 feet above sea level. This is due to the fact that Makerere University, the country's first public university, is situated on this hill.

According to mythology, this hill was formerly referred to as Bwaise. Then one day, one of the Buganda monarchs spent the night out with a woman and neglected to return to his Mengo castle in the dead of night. He reportedly yelled, "Ganno makerere," or "it has dawned without my realisation," when he realised that dawn had arrived while he was still in the concubine's position. The hill apparently gained the name Makerere from that point forward.

Whether true or incorrect, Makerere University, founded in 1922, is the prominent landmark on this hill. Wandegeya Shopping Center is located at the bottom. Wandegeye is a spot where drinking and partying continue into the early hours of the morning. The young college students who frequent the area are what ignited the celebration.
