Nyakarongo Central Forest Reserve

Once upon a time, in the heart of Western Uganda, there lies a hidden gem, a sanctuary of nature’s beauty and diversity, the Nyakarongo Central Forest Reserve. This protected area, located approximately 215 kilometers from Kampala, the bustling capital city of Uganda, is a testament to the country’s commitment to conservation and sustainable development.

Setting and Structure

The forest reserve, covering an expansive area of 3,535 hectares, is nestled in the serene Mugarama sub-county and the quaint Kangombe village. It is situated close to the villages of Wantema, Bigaga, and Katwetwe. The geographical coordinates place it at latitude 0.8378° or 0° 50’ 16" north and longitude 31.1548° or 31° 9’ 17" east.

Conservation Status

Nyakarongo is a protected reserve area managed by the National Forestry Authority, a government agency responsible for enforcing protection of the ecosystem in all forest reserves and significantly minimizing encroachment and deforestation. This is part of Uganda’s broader conservation efforts, with the forest cover standing at about 1.9 million hectares, which is 10% of Uganda’s land cover area.

Threats and Challenges

Despite its protected status, Nyakarongo Forest Reserve has not been immune to the threats of deforestation. In the 1990s, the forest, along with other forests in Kibaale district, was significantly depleted by new settlers and Banyoro. In 2023, 34 people were imprisoned in Kibaale district for destroying the Nyakarango protected forest. The forestry authority took action due to the worrisome rate of forest loss in the Kibaale area. An estimated 1,000 Banyoro encroached on the district’s five forest reserves, totaling approximately 5,000 hectares.
