Once upon a time, in the heart of the Albertine Region of Uganda, there lay a verdant expanse of high forest, a sanctuary for wildlife, and a testament to the country’s rich biodiversity. This is the story of the Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve.

Location and Geography

Nestled within the Kibaale district, the Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve spans an impressive area of 1194.94 hectares. It forms part of the Muzizi zone, which extends from Kikuube to Ntoroko districts through Kibale, Kakumiro, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Mubende. The forest serves as a water catchment area for both the Ruzaire and Muzizi rivers.

Wildlife

The forest is a haven for a variety of wildlife species. It is home to chimpanzees and Red Tailed monkeys, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Uganda’s fauna. Bird watchers would also find the forest a paradise, with numerous species making their home in the dense canopy.

Conservation Status

The National Forestry Authority (NFA) manages the Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve. However, the forest’s conservation status has been a subject of controversy. In 2017, the NFA sought to lease all the forest reserves, including Ruzaire, for commercial tree-growing. This move sparked a legal battle with the Banyoro community organization, Bunyoro Kitara Reparations Agency (BUKITAREPA), which demanded a halt to the issuance of licenses in forest reserves.

Threats

Despite its ecological importance, the Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve faces several threats. Commercial farming for trees and sugarcane, encroachment, and high deforestation rates are among the challenges. Illegal commercial logging and political interference also pose significant threats to the forest’s survival.

Conclusion

The Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve is a vital part of Uganda’s natural heritage. Its conservation is crucial for maintaining the country’s biodiversity and ensuring the survival of its unique wildlife. As we look to the future, it is our collective responsibility to safeguard this precious resource for generations to come.
