Management and Designation

The National Forestry Authority manages the reserve. It was officially designated as a reserve in 1968, marking the beginning of its journey as a protected area.

Setting and Structure

The reserve is situated at coordinates of 0.6656°S and 29.8702°E. It plays a crucial role in reducing flooding by protecting the banks of the Kachindo Wetlands. The forest is commonly used for local fuel, charcoal, and forestry investment.

Conservation Status

The size of the forest reserve was impacted by the road upgrade of Rukungiri-Kihihi-Ishasha/Kanungu Road to Bituminous Standards in 2013. From 1996 to 2002, 25 square kilometers of the forest were deforested.

Threats

The forest faces several threats, including cash crop farming, illegal lumbering, poaching, deforestation, and encroachment. These challenges pose a significant risk to the sustainability and survival of the forest.

Conclusion

The Rwengiri Central Forest Reserve is more than just a forest; it’s a symbol of nature’s resilience. Despite the threats it faces, it continues to stand tall, providing invaluable services to the ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. As we move forward, it’s crucial that we recognize the importance of such natural reserves and take the necessary steps to protect and preserve them for future generations.
