Location of Nsambya

Along the Kampala-Ggaba Road, Nsambya is situated about 5 kilometres (3 mi) south-southeast of Kampala's business district. 4,010 feet (1,222 m) above mean sea level is the height of Nsambya Hill.

Overview

The Mill Hill Fathers' residence is more well-known than the 4,010-foot-high Nsambya hill itself. Bishop Henry Hanlon led a party of five Mill Hill Fathers who travelled to East Africa in 1895 to found the Vicariate of the Upper Nile. An English rather than French Catholic presence was seen as preferable because Uganda, where the White Fathers had landed in 1879, had become a British Protectorate in 1894.

At Nsambya, the first mission station was constructed. They started a church and many schools, just like many other missionaries. The best hospital in the nation, Nsambya Hospital, is another feature of the hill. One can see a lot of downtown Kampala, the Lake Victoria shoreline, and the Ggaba landing site from the summit of Nsambya hill. Along the street are a number of furniture and craft stores selling distinctive African beds, chairs, and other trinkets. The American embassy is located here.
