The Ugandan Kampala Fish Market: An Eye-Opening Look Into Ggaba Landing site.

The fishing village of Ggaba derives its name from the Luganda word for ‘serve.’  Ggaba is located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, at the southern tip of the city of Kampala. It lies in Makindye Division, one of the five administrative boroughs of the city.

The road distance between Gaba and Kampala's central business district is approximately 11 kilometers.

Apart from fishing, there are so many other activities that take place at the site, which include; sand mining, offloading timber, fish auction, etc.

You could also get a closer look at the auctioning process where a fish is sold to business people.

Fishing at Ggaba landing site

Gaba landing site is one of the leading suppliers of fresh fish in kampala. It serves as a destination for fishermen returning to the shore and fish buyers. The fish mostly caught in the waters near the site include: Nile perch, Tilapia, Lung fish and Catfish.

Tilapia is one of the most common fish in Uganda and a good number of Ugandans will call it their favorite fish. It is one of the main reasons gaba landing site is always packed with vehicles especially over the weekend.

Fish processing at the landing site includes filtering, smoking, salting and sun drying the fish.

A boat ride at Gabba Landing site.

Before getting into the kitchen we took a ride on lake victoria which is Africa's largest lake.

At the time of writing this article, they offer tours of the fish market with a guide providing information about the various fish sold here.

The price for a boat ride is negotiable but we paid twenty five thousand ugandan shillings (25,000/=) for a ride to Motima island.

After visiting the island we encountered a very friendly guy who allowed us to take a peek in his kitchen and show us how fish was prepared.

This place is always so full to capacity that you have to wait in a queue for a place to sit and enjoy your meal, especially on weekends.

I love how they prepare the fish and the prices are very friendly with the cheapest going for as low as fifteen thousand ugandan shillings (15,000/=).

How the fish is prepared

The fish is marinated beforehand with a mixture of garlic, ginger and salt. It is then left to stand for about 20 minutes. Cooking oil is heated in a pan. The fish is then placed in the pan with oil and let it deep fry till its golden brown. After it's removed it from the oil and let the excess oil drip off.

It is then served with a salad and potato fries, coleslaw and lemon slices.

After the meal we are all super excited to come back and share our experience with you so you can come and also get a personal experience.

The sun was setting as we headed back home and it was just another lovely evening in Uganda, the pearl of Africa.
