Kololo Hill reaches a height of 4,302 feet (1,311 m) above sea level at its highest point.

Overview

The 4,305-foot Kololo hill, in contrast to other hills steeped in Buganda tradition, is thought to have gotten its name from Rwot Awich, the paramount chief of Payiira in Acholi who was imprisoned there by the British in 1912.According to reports, the chief, who was reportedly suffering from imprisonment, kept saying "kololo," which in Acholi means "on one's own" (from "kolo," which means "single"). He was complaining about being abandoned as he passed away. The name "hill of Kololo" stuck after his incarceration and attendants who did not understand Acholi began calling the hill that he was on "hill of Kololo." The Summit View military barracks has replaced the colonial outpost on top of the hill that served as a prison.

Colonial officials and civil servants moved into Kololo Hill during this time. It is one of the best planned, with a good road system, lovely homes, expansive lawns, etc. Kololo Airstrip, which is located at the foot of the hill, has a section set aside as a cemetery for "national heroes." Only two notable Ugandans have been laid to rest here thus far: Prof. Yusuf Kilonde Lule, the founding chairman of the National Resistance Movement, the country's ruling party, and I.K. Musaazi, a leader of the independence movement who founded Uganda National Congress, the nation's first political party.
