Common Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia)

The common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia), also called the grey duiker or bush duiker, is a small antelope that can be found all over Africa south of the Sahara, with the exception of the Horn of Africa and the rainforests in the centre and west of the continent. In general, they are found in savanna and hilly habitats, including the edges of human settlements, that have enough vegetation cover to allow them to hide.

Common Duiker Behaviour

Breeding occurs all year long, and after a gestation period of 6 to 7.5 months, the female gives birth to one fawn.

Males prefer to rest on elevated ground where they can see their territory. Males are territorial and smear gland secretions on rocks and branches to mark their territories. Females, on the other hand, favour deeper cover. The ability of this species to live in a variety of habitats and its adaptable, generalist diet both contribute to its overall success.

The common duiker's diet

The common duiker consumes a variety of foods, including insects, frogs, small mammals and birds, as well as carrion, in addition to browsing for leaves, flowers, fruits, and tubers. They are able to go for very long periods of time without drinking as long as they have vegetation to eat, from which they get some water. They frequently avoid drinking any water during the rainy season in favour of getting their fluids from fruits. Frequently, they will scavenge for these fruits beneath trees where monkeys are foraging. They are active both during the day and at night, but they become more nocturnal close to populated areas, possibly as a result of the presence of stray dogs and people.
