The Enchanting Zoka Forest

Once upon a time, in the heart of Africa, there lay a lush green paradise, a sanctuary for diverse species, and a beacon of tranquility. This is the story of Zoka Forest, a natural tropical rainforest nestled in the Northern Region of Uganda.

Location and Size

Zoka Forest, a component of the larger East Moyo Wildlife Reserve, is situated in the southern part of Adjumani District. It is approximately 50 kilometers south of Adjumani, the district capital. The forest spans an area of 1,259 hectares (12.59 km2) of tropical forest.

Biodiversity

Zoka Forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity. It is home to around 50 mammalian species, over 150 bird species, and more than 300 plant varieties. Among these, several primate species and an endemic flying squirrel can only be found in Zoka. The forest also houses several large mahogany trees, providing a cool respite from the heat of the rest of the East Madi Wildlife Reserve.

Human Impact and Conservation Efforts

Despite its natural beauty and ecological importance, Zoka Forest faces significant threats. Charcoal burning and encroachment for agriculture have destroyed 52% of the forest cover. The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has accused members of the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) of illegally felling trees in the forest reserve.

In response to these threats, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda launched an investigation into the plundering of the Zoka Forest in August 2016. The government has also been urged to fence the forest and make it compulsory to grow fast-maturing trees on at least one and a half hectares of land to be used as wood fuel.
