Once upon a time, in the heart of Western Uganda, there was a natural wonder called the Kagombe Central Forest Reserve. This 301-square-kilometre (74,000-acre) sanctuary, nestled in the districts of Kagadi and Nyamarundu sub-county, is a testament to the country’s commitment to biodiversity and conservation.

A Rich Tapestry of Biodiversity

The Kagombe Central Forest Reserve is not just a forest; it’s a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. The reserve is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including the elusive chimpanzee. The forest canopy is a patchwork of Elgon Olive, Preminor Angoles, Macamia platicalex, Ebony, and Abezia, providing a lush habitat for these creatures.

Conservation Efforts

Kagombe was designated a forest reserve in 1932 and has been under the careful stewardship of Uganda’s National Forestry Authority (NFA). In 2019, the NFA took decisive action to evict encroachers from the reserve, a move aimed at restoring Uganda’s forest cover and ensuring the conservation of protected areas. More recently, in 2022, the NFA partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature, Uganda, to launch a forest restoration drive for Kagombe and Bugoma forest reserves.

Threats to the Reserve

Despite these efforts, the Kagombe Central Forest Reserve faces numerous threats. Encroachment, charcoal burning, crop raiding, forest fires, illegal pitsawing, and medicinal plant collection are among the challenges that the reserve grapples with. Hunting of bush meat with dogs and nets is prevalent, and the chimpanzees in Kagombe are affected by the indiscriminate effects of snaring using spears and bows. Over the past decade, agribusiness has devastated nearly three-quarters of the reserve. Since 2000, over 13,000 hectares of Kagombe forest have been encroached on by locals in Kagadi district.

The Power of Community

In the face of these challenges, local communities have rallied together to counteract the effects of climate change through afforestation and patrolling. Their efforts underscore the importance of community involvement in conservation initiatives and serve as a beacon of hope for the future of Kagombe Central Forest Reserve.

In conclusion, the Kagombe Central Forest Reserve is a vital part of Uganda’s natural heritage. Its rich biodiversity and the ongoing efforts to protect and restore it make it a fascinating subject of study. As we continue to grapple with the effects of climate change and habitat loss, places like Kagombe remind us of the importance of conservation and the role we all have to play in it.
